Hospice Palliative Care

  • is active compassionate care offered to improve quality of life for individuals with life-limiting illness where cure is no longer deemed to be possible.
  • is a holistic care plan that addresses the physical, psychosocial, practical, and spiritual needs of the patient and their family/friends during end-of-life
  • provides symptom and pain management where emphasis is on comfort care
  • utilizes a team approach involving the patient, family/friends, doctors, nurses, social workers, hospice staff and volunteers
  • is provided at home, hospital, specialized palliative care unit, residential care and hospice residences
  • allows people to continue receiving treatments that slow the progress of the disease and reduce uncomfortable symptoms

Volunteer Palliative Support Program

Volunteers provide:

  • one-to-one support to patients and their families/friends in a variety of settings; at the patient’s home, in Hospice Residence, in hospital and in residential care facilities
  • respite care to support the caregiver in taking time for themselves, in home, hospital, residential care and in hospice residence
  • vigil support during the last 72 hours of one’s life in hospice residence, in hospital and in residential care

Volunteers are:

  • skilled listeners who are sensitive, compassionate companions and are respectful of confidentiality and cultural diversity

Volunteers must:

  • successfully complete the 30-hour comprehensive Hospice Volunteer Training
  • sign a confidentiality agreement
  • provide a CRC (criminal record check) from RCMP
  • provide character references
  • attend an interview
