Hospice Palliative Care
- is active compassionate care offered to improve quality of life for individuals with life-limiting illness where cure is no longer deemed to be possible.
- is a holistic care plan that addresses the physical, psychosocial, practical, and spiritual needs of the patient and their family/friends during end-of-life
- provides symptom and pain management where emphasis is on comfort care
- utilizes a team approach involving the patient, family/friends, doctors, nurses, social workers, hospice staff and volunteers
- is provided at home, hospital, specialized palliative care unit, residential care and hospice residences
- allows people to continue receiving treatments that slow the progress of the disease and reduce uncomfortable symptoms

Volunteer Palliative Support Program
Volunteers provide:
- one-to-one support to patients and their families/friends in a variety of settings; at the patient’s home, in Hospice Residence, in hospital and in residential care facilities
- respite care to support the caregiver in taking time for themselves, in home, hospital, residential care and in hospice residence
- vigil support during the last 72 hours of one’s life in hospice residence, in hospital and in residential care
Volunteers are:
- skilled listeners who are sensitive, compassionate companions and are respectful of confidentiality and cultural diversity
Volunteers must:
- successfully complete the 30-hour comprehensive Hospice Volunteer Training
- sign a confidentiality agreement
- provide a CRC (criminal record check) from RCMP
- provide character references
- attend an interview
